
From Hand-Drawn Sketch to Graphical Abstract: AI-Assisted Design
The sketch you already have
Most researchers start a graphical abstract with pen and paper. You sketch a rough layout — the main figure here, the pathway flowing left to right, one panel for the phenotype, another for the mechanism. It takes five minutes and captures the thinking. The hard part is turning it into a clean digital figure.
Abfig takes that sketch and generates a complete graphical abstract from it with AI, sized to your target journal.
Step 1: take a photo of your sketch
Draw your layout on paper. It does not need to be neat — boxes for panels, arrows for flow, a few labels in the margins is enough. Take a photo with your phone.
Step 2: pick your journal and upload
Choose your target journal first, so the output is sized correctly — Nature (90×50 mm), Cell (102×102 mm), Elsevier (112×45 mm), or ACS (~82×44 mm), all at 300 DPI. Then upload the photo of your sketch.
Step 3: AI generates the figure
Abfig's AI reads the layout of your drawing — where you placed panels, which way the flow runs, how the elements relate — and generates a complete graphical abstract image based on it. You get a clean, structured figure that follows the arrangement you sketched, rendered in a consistent visual style.
This is not tracing or OCR. The AI interprets the drawing semantically: two boxes joined by an arrow become a sequential relationship, a large central box becomes the focal element.
Step 4: iterate
If the first result is not quite right, you steer it through the input rather than editing the image by hand:
- Regenerate for a different take on the same sketch.
- Add a short text description of what each part should show, then generate again.
- Try a different journal size to see the composition at another aspect ratio.
Abfig produces the whole figure each time, so iteration is about guiding what goes in, not nudging elements on a canvas.
Step 5: export sized to your journal
When a version works, export it at your journal's specification — Nature 90×50 mm, Cell 102×102 mm, Elsevier 112×45 mm, ACS ~82×44 mm, each at 300 DPI, as TIFF or PNG in RGB. Always confirm the exact spec against your journal's current author guidelines before submitting.

Why the sketch route helps
The bottleneck in graphical abstract creation has never been the ideas — researchers know their story. It is execution: drawing the diagram, arranging panels, setting dimensions, fixing resolution.
Starting from a sketch removes the blank-canvas problem. Your thinking is already on the page, in the fastest medium there is — pen and paper. The AI handles the translation into a complete, journal-sized figure. From a layout you already have in mind, that can take just a few minutes.
One caveat worth stating plainly: an AI-generated figure is a draft. Review it for scientific accuracy before you use it, and check your target journal's policy on AI-generated images — several major publishers require disclosure, and some do not accept AI-generated figures at all.
